Camp Rising Sun Receives Grant for Water Accessible Wheelchairs

We are excited to announce that Camp Rising Sun has been awarded a substantial grant from the Draper Foundation Fund, part of the Northwest Connecticut Community Foundation. This generous grant will fund vital accessibility enhancements, ensuring that every camper, regardless of physical limitations, can fully participate in our camp activities.

With this new funding, we will be able to purchase beach accessibility items, including a water access chair and a roll-up walkway. These additions will allow our wheelchair-bound campers to enjoy the lake and other waterfront activities alongside their peers.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Draper Foundation Fund for their support,” said Shaun Heffernan, our Executive Director. “This grant will significantly enhance our ability to provide an inclusive and enjoyable camp experience for all our campers. Ensuring that every child, regardless of mobility issues, can participate fully in camp activities.”

As we prepare for our 2024 season, themed “Olympics,” we are excited about these improvements and our continued ability to offer a week of fun, laughter, and normalcy to children who have faced significant challenges. Our all-volunteer staff, many of whom are former campers or professionals from various fields, are dedicated to creating an awesome experience for every child.

The impact of the Draper Foundation Fund’s grant extends beyond just our summer camp. The new equipment will also be available to other children with similar needs who attend programs at Camp Jewell YMCA throughout the year, enhancing our long term partnership with Camp Jewell.

Thank you to the Draper Foundation Fund for helping us make Camp Rising Sun a place where every child can fun. We look forward to another amazing camp season, filled with new memories and friendships.
