About Our Staff

Everyone knows that our campers are an extraordinary group of brave children, but not everyone knows that our volunteer counselors are extraordinary, too! Each has their own motivation for volunteering but every one is a caring, dedicated, responsible and fun-loving individual. They give up a week of vacation time, a week of salary, a week with their own families to live in a cabin, eat camp food, dress in silly costumes and return home incredibly tired. It is quite possibly the best week in their year!

The Camp Rising Sun volunteer experience is as much a gift to them as it is to our campers. They truly become part of the “Camp Rising Sun Family.” If you have these special qualities and want to share in the fun, please click here for an application. Our hiring process starts in January.

There are plenty of staff on-hand at all times. The overall ratio of campers to staff is two to one. Cabin staff eat, sleep, and participate in activities with the campers. Other staff positions are administrative and include directors, medical staff, program directors and specialized staff.

All staff members are screened by the American Cancer Society and camp director.

Medical staff includes a doctor and three nurses who are on the premises 24 hours a day.

Camp Rising Sun's complete health center is staffed 24-hours a day by a doctor and three nurses. Children who need chemotherapy or blood test can get treatment right on campus.

Each child is evaluated daily and monitored to make sure he or she takes any prescribed medicine as necessary.

The medical staff takes an active part in the camp. You'll find them dressed in blue jeans and bright shirts, joining in games and skits, comforting a child, having a quiet conversation with a camper or urging campers to challenge themselves in a new activity.
